Big Al DeploymentACY Supports Artificial Reef Program

After teaming up with Bausch-American Towers to sponsor the deployment of two Navy communications towers in 2008, ACY recently reinforced its support of the Martin County artificial reef program with the donation of a 69-foot steel tugboat that became Martin County's newest artificial reef on February 24th.

Tugboat BIG AL — now known as the Glasrud reef, named for Ted Glasrud who underwrote the project — was sunk in 187 feet of water near to Latitude N 27 12.676' Long. W 80 00.261'. The vessel rests alongside the Wickstrom reef, a steel freighter deployed in January 2003. This is the second artificial reef project ACY and its affiliates have sponsored in the past two years. In 2008, ACY and affiliate Bausch-American Towers sponsored the deployment of two Navy communications towers in 200 feet of water south of the Wickstrom Reef.

The goal of the artificial reef program is to improve fishing and diving in the waters off of Martin County and to promote the growth of a rare, deepwater coral in the Oculina genus. This type of coral, commonly known as the ivory tree coral, is slow-growing and very delicate. It is often associated with areas of high bio diversity, as it provides ideal spawning sites for numerous species of reef-dwelling fish, including economically important species such as groupers and snappers. The reef will also attract many pelagic species, including sailfish, wahoo and dolphin.
